Marcus “Bad Intentions” Edwards has agreed to terms of a new contract with the MFC, and the deal will kick into gear at MFC 40: Crowned Kings taking place on Friday, May 9 in Edmonton, Alberta. The lineup, which will include three title fights, will air live on AXS TV Fights from the Shaw Conference Centre.
Edwards, who fights out of Littleton, Colorado, isn’t the least bit apprehensive about touting his skills.
“The fans can expect to see a brutal, vicious, bloody, bone-breaking, life-shaking, hard-hitting, life-altering experience,” said Edwards, who successfully debuted at MFC 39 with a first-round finish of Sean Powers.
“What I bring to the table as opposed to others in the division is that I’m a personable fighter who finishes fights and brings unmatched intensity, brutality, talent, explosiveness and athletic ability. I always put on a show for the fans and I always exhibit the utmost level of sportsmanship.”
There is a great deal to love in the complete package.
“No doubt in my mind Marcus Edwards is the most exciting lightweight prospect out there right now,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “He can promote a fight. He sells the organization, himself, and his fight and then goes out backs it all up.
“Marcus is personable, extremely likable and yet very violent. He comes to wreck his opponent and that’s the kind of guy who we want in the Maximum Fighting Championship.
“I’m putting it on the table in front of Marcus right now. If he looks as good as I know he can look at MFC 40, he will get the next shot the MFC world lightweight title.”
The MFC’s 155-pound division belt is up for grabs at MFC 40 in a rematch between Tom Gallicchio and Kurt Southern. A victory by Edwards on the same card means he becomes the next foe for the winner of the title fight.
Edwards wants the belt and he’s prepared to destroy anyone who steps in his path. His opponent for MFC 40 will be announced shortly.
“Being next in line to take the lightweight strap is an honor that I would very much appreciate,” said Edwards.
“My hard work thus far is paying off and I will be working harder than ever to show the world what I have to offer. All I have to say to my upcoming opponent is ’Watch out. You’re in the way of a man on a mission, so be ready.”
All six of Edwards’ victories have ended in stoppages, five of those coming inside in the first round and three have come to a screeching halt in less than one minute. Edwards doesn’t get paid by the hour so he has the mindset to get in, get out and make it look good.
“I have nothing in mind but to finish my opponent in a devastating, exciting and vicious fashion,” said Edwards. “The game plan is always to be a finisher and being exciting means everything to me. I get the crowd riled up and in return it fires me up. I’m a people pleaser and that’s where I get my satisfaction.”
Edwards had one of the most prolific amateur careers in MMA during which he initially attracted the attention of the Maximum Fighting Championship. He went a perfect 11-0 in the amateur ranks – 10 wins coming via stoppage and eight of the victories ending inside the opening round. As a pro, his first notable verdict came with submission over Dakota Cochrane, and his most-recent win over Powers, in which he pummeled his foe before sealing the victory with rear-naked choke, put him place to become a real threat to the rest of the MFC’s lightweights.
Edwards didn’t waste a minute in signing a long-term agreement with the MFC after his decisive win in early January.
“There are many advantages to becoming an MFC fighter,” said Edwards. “I will be taking my fighting career to the next level by fighting higher caliber athletes on the biggest televised promotion in Canada.
“And the MFC being one of the top promotions in the world will provide me the platform to showcase my skills to the world and receive more coverage and recognition worldwide.”
